Daydreaming, or really far-fetched plans

Goal

The real goal is to use a Netwinder as a replacement for an aging 486 as a packet-filtering router.

With the 2.0.35 kernel now ready, this is much much closer to reality now. Only Squid, more testing on ZMailer, and an ICQ proxy are needed. (I really need to write an ICQ proxy soon, or I will be hit by my user...)

Obstacles

1998-11-21 How about the flash ROM? What if an intruder succeeds in breaking into the router?
  • There are people who insists on having someone cracked root is not all lost because of things like securelevels. For this school of thought, the flash ROM is a big deal, unless flashing is disabled in a nonzero securelevel.
  • There are also people who insists that having someone cracked root is already a lost-lost situation. For this school of thought, the flash ROM is no big deal because to flash the ROM you must already be root.
Real routers such as Ascend P50 or Cisco 2503 have flash ROM's. But then they don't have a usable shell, or do they?
1998-8-10 The system software base is not stable yet. I did not know this. More to the point, I was (and am still) clueless. :)
