David F. Skoll Roaring Penguin Software Dear Mr. Skoll, Recently you posted a message to the OCLUG mailing list advertising an opportunity for a software developer and technical support specialist within Roaring Penguin Software Inc. Given the responsibilities and requirements posted for this position, I believe that I would be an ideal candidate. The skills set your are seeking is fairly well aligned with my own. My recent work experience has involved quite a bit of web application development, mostly using PHP with a variety of SQL databases (both open source and proprietary), as well as Apache. I am also experienced with the C programming language, and competent with Perl (in addition to other languages which do not enter into the requirements for this position). Most of my past development has been done on Linux systems, although I have some Solaris development experience as well. I have been running Linux exclusively on all of my computers since 1997 (across three different architectures) and am familiar with the duties of Linux/UNIX system administration. I have participated in the Debian project since 1999, becoming an official Debian Developer in 2000. I have contributed to a few other free software initiatives, notably the Kernel Janitors project and OCLUG. Finally, my telephone manner is calm, patient and friendly. I work well helping people on a one-on-one basis. On a larger scale, I have presented free software to larger groups of users with great success. My OCLUG GPG tutorial in May 2002 helped many people get that tool incorporated into their e-mail setup. Most importantly, I am a positive and respectful person. You will never hear me complain about a client when they are not around. I have always sought to help people obtain the information that they need instead of berating them for the information that they lack. I believe that my past conduct on mailing lists (OCLUG and others) will confirm this. Attached is my curriculum vitae, in which you will find a brief history of my work experience, both remunerated and volunteer, along with information relating to my skills and academic background.
